Hillary and Obama Swapping Money for Support?
By P Alfonso on Jun 25, 2008 | In 9. Presidential Election 2008
With over $9 million in unpaid bills for her campaign expenses and $12.5 million that she had lent it, Hillary is sitting on a $22.5 million debt. By no means are she and Bill broke, but no one likes to part with that kind of money. Hillary has a here say chilled support for Obama; their negotiations clearly indicate that there is support from her side, if there is cash from his. Knowing the Clintons, Obama will get an amount of support that will be equivalent to how much cash he can produce.
Follow up:
There is a lot at stake in this unwanted pact: If Hillary does not fully throw her support behind Obama, he most likely will only have a slim chance of being elected. If she decides not to campaign and endorse McCain, Obama might as well quit now, because his chances of winning would go from slim to none.
The Democratic Party clearly understands, is payback time. Whether they like it or not they will have to pick up Hillary’s debt. It is human nature; she is not a happy puppy for having narrowly lost the nomination. The far left has supported Obama and most of Clinton's black constituency abandoned her and switched to Barack. What could be sweeter than to let Obama lose if they don’t pay up?
Let’s be realistic and accept the Clintons are no fools and are also known for being very shrewd. They have in their resume a big list of controversial business dealings. They also have ethical behavior that clearly shows that for money and power, they will do things that most people would not do. Not as an attack on them, it is understood that ethics is not in the character of many politicians, Obama is no exception by association.
Bill is sitting in the back ground excerpting pressure on the Obama campaign by not having endorsed him. He is obviously waiting until his wife and Obama finalize a deal that would guaranteed that her debt will be paid. Obama has until the convention; to get his supporters to contribute to Hillary the money needed to clear her debt. Otherwise after the convention she will have to pick up the entire tab for her debt and absorb the loss of the $12.5 million that she had lent her campaign. She has a lot of leverage, and obviously is putting a lot of pressure on Obama and the Democratic Party.
To lose the nomination and the cash would not just be a loss but a crushing defeat. Hillary is not in a situation in which she has to lose twice. In a previous article I wrote that she has other options. What about a third option in which having failed with the nomination and the cash: Abandon her political aspirations with the Democratic Party and become more of the centrist that I think the Clintons are. Do as Joe Lieberman and become an Independent. Pursue a political agenda without Party affiliation and with speeches recover the money lost during her campaign. Leaving the Senate seat and joining Bill making money while being on the spot light sounds like fun. Returning to the Senate floor after losing the nomination and having bucked head with other fellow Democrats is not going to be fun.
Plenty has been reported that Obama at a young age acquired Islam in his resume, after his mother married an Indonesian Muslim. Many in our country fairly question how much influence those years made in his believes, thinking process and patriotism. Hillary on the other hand has Republican roots as she once campaigned for Barry Goldwater and other Republicans. Later in life while attending college she gradually changed to more Liberal views. Same with her, as a more seasoned adult and politician we could also say: How much of that early conservatism may still be in her roots? One thing that separates Hillary from Obama is that even those who strongly disagree with her views do not question her patriotism.
To abandon support for Barack Obama without endorsing McCain would allow her to keep the support of her loyalist such as Geraldine Ferraro and many others within the Democrats. At the same time it would raise her status among women, older Democrats, Independents and even some moderate Republicans.
As for Obama; he would get recognition for his tremendous success in becoming the first Caucasian-African-American presidential candidate that was not elected.
