Colin Powell disappointing endorsement of Barack Obama
By P Alfonso on Oct 19, 2008 | In 9. Presidential Election 2008
Where the endorsements of Obama by Colin Powell will not likely make any difference in the outcome of the presidential election it shows how racially divided our country is in this year election. Powell's main points for his decision to support Obama are; “the ability to inspire” and “the inclusive nature of his campaign”. If this statement would have been made by someone other than Powell it would be understandable but coming from him is at the least disappointing and incomprehensible.
Follow up:
Another rationalization for his support of Obama is that; “the Republican Party has moved more to the right than I would like to see it”. All three of the statements are poor excuses for his endorsement.
Has Powell actually fallen to the racist crusade of black activists? For decades he has been the target of criticism from the blacks in our country who saw him as not black enough because he was a Republican and was not active following and being the protector of the black agenda. He and Condoleezza Rice have been an obstacle for black activists to prove the argument that there is racial oppression and lack of opportunity for advancement in our country. Powell and Rice have been the bastions demonstrating that whatever obstacles there are success can be achieved.
For a man of his education, knowledge and experience to say that he is supporting a candidate because of his ability to inspire is hard to swallow. This view would be easier to accept from someone who is naive and gullible. He is the one that should have served as an inspiration to the blacks in our nation but instead he has been inspired to follow the 92% of blacks that are supporting Barack Obama.
Even more disturbing is his rational that the inclusive nature of his campaign has attracted him to support Obama. Again, weren’t he and others that were and are part of the George W. Bush cabinet proof that Republicans and Conservatives are inclusive as long as they are patriots that believe in Democracy, Capitalism, national strength and share traditional values?
Last but not least of his indefensible reasoning is that he is in disagreement with the Republican Party because in his opinion it has moved too far to the right. Ironically most Republicans believe is to the contrary. During the Bush administration the feeling among Republicans is that the Party has moved too far to the center. That is one of the problems that John McCain had for which he was unable to energize the more Conservative Republicans. The current economic bailout has divided the Conservatives where many have accused the Bush Administration of promoting Socialism.
Do to the incomprehensible nature of the event there is a fact that unite Colin Powell and Barack Obama that cannot be overlooked with research. Neither one of those men are Black nor descendant of U.S. born slaves. Neither one of these men to the best of my knowledge have ever been documented of addressing themselves as Black. Other terms have being use to imply that they are not Caucasians but we are yet to hear Barack Obama say that he is Black. He is always reminding us of his white mother and grandparents.
It is difficult to accept that a man who proved that the racial divisions can be overcome with hard work and dedication could leave behind everything that he ever believed for support of something that has been at the opposite end through his entire career in the military. Powell's career in the military developed during the cold war years. These were difficult times in which our enemies were the promoters of Socialism and they were seen as a threat to our country and the free world.
To put it all in the right perspective we need to take a close look at what Collin Powell has just rejected and embraced:
He has rejected: Conservatism, his own Republican Party, Capitalism and the traditional American way of life.
He has embraced: Liberalism, Obama’s and Biden's well known Socialist views starting with redistribution of wealth, those who hate our way of life, those who detest our military and those who would like to destroy our nation's traditional values from marriage to religion.
For a man of his stature Collin Powell is living proof of how racially divided this election is. Whites have not created nor are the perpetrators of this division for many whites support Barack Obama. No one should expect white Conservatives to support a Leftist Liberal Socialist of any race. On the other hand if Collin Powell would have run as a Conservative Republican who believes in Capitalism he would have received the white votes of those that Obama supporters accuse of being racist. One example of how racist this election is on part of the Blacks is that they abandoned Hillary Clinton during the primaries. So as we can clearly see the only racist vote that we have in this election is that of Obama’s Black supporters that are only voting for him because of his race which incidentally is not truly Black.
Vote wisely in 2008
